Ernest Hemingway

What was America like in Ernest Hemingway’s time, 1899-1961?
I’m doing a book report and part of it is to describe America during the lifetime of my author (Ernest Hemingway) and discuss how this may have influenced his writing. It has to be 1/2 page long and I can’t find anything. A summary please?
During the first half of the 21st century there was a lot of turbulence in general. Things were changing rapidly all over the world. The values and lifestyles people had when Hemmingway was growing up may have been markedly different than the values and lifestyles people had when he died.
There were lots global conflicts during his lifetime starting with WWI (a war that he served in) WWII and the Cold War. At the same time the world started to become smaller figuratively speaking.
Cultures, ideas, information, products from all over the world started to become accessible to everyone because of improved technology that allowed more contact with people who were really far away (i.e. radio, television, air travel, etc.) That will definitely effect what an author thinks about or writes about.
What’s most interesting, and what you see most in his writing, is the fact that the time he lived was a time when old ways were transitioning to new ways. In Old Man And The Sea for example, you have a guy who lives in the Caribbean, who still fishes for marlin out of a tiny boat, and teaches a young boy this ancient fishing technique, however, when he’s on land, he likes to listen to the New York Yankees play games on the Radio.

The Killers (1964) [VHS] $14.98 As with its 1946 predecessor of the same title and directed by noir maestro Robert Siodmak, this version of The Killers makes much ado out of Ernest Hemingway’s classic short story of two hit men who shake up a diner while looking for their prey. Hemingway’s sketch took up perhaps the first six minutes of Siodmak’s film, and everything after that was an add-on. This 1964 remake (of sorts) by Don S… |

The Snows of Kilimanjaro [VHS] $1.29 Several pieces of Hemingway fiction fold together for this pastiche movie, in which a writer (Gregory Peck) lies on the slope of Africa’s famous mountain and thinks back on his life while awaiting medical attention. “Africa” in this case is a back-screen projection; fortunately, the majority of the film is told through flashbacks set in France, Spain, and other parts of the Dark Continent. Peck’s … |
